Are compound movements necessary for building muscle ? -
First let’s asses the difference between compound VS isolation to secure some common ground...
⚫️Compound - a multi joint moment that works several muscles at once eg a deadlift
🔴Isolation - a singular joint movement that works only one muscle at a time
In hindsight we know that a stronger muscle is essentially a bigger muscle that statement is individual but I know many that will back me on that.
The stimulus for growth created by a compound movement is far more greater than an isolation due to the loading we can create at any given point when we apply this with progressive overload we create the ‘optimal’ window for growth considering we have the correct rep ranges in place.
Don’t get me wrong isolation movements have their place in any and all training programs but when we are chasing growth we need to prioritise exercise selection and pinpoint which will bring the most growth long term. For me deadlifts have been one of my go movements for years and I’ve developed some significant density from doing so but that is pivotal for me and individual so find what works for you and stick at it.
