If i was to ask you what calories are and the purpose they serve in terms of your physique and overall health would you be able to provide an explantation?
For the vast majority most individuals are unaware of calories and their importance so i will use this post to uncover and explain the topic.
Calories fall into 3 distinct groups:
CALORIE MAINTENANCE - this is the baseline number to which we maintain our current bodyweight now bare in mind this number is completely individual and you will each have your own figure. For example if you weight 80kg and your maintenance was 2500 then over day you would consume this amount to maintain that current 80kg.
CALORIE SURPLUS - simply put this means eating over your maintenance which means over a period of time your bodyweight will increase we use this if we want to put on muscle and get stronger, progression is key and you only want to increase this by 200-300 and taper up accordingly with your bodyweight
CALORIE DEFICIT - this is opposite to a surplus and means we eat below our maintenance which means we influence weight loss as we eat below what we need to maintain again we need to taper this slowly otherwise we risk losing muscle tissue and feeling exhausted as well as a load of other health risks too a 200 deficit will be perfect to follow for the first few weeks and then we just minus from this number when weight loss stalls.
Whatever your goal you will most definitely fall into one of these groups and if you aren’t losing weight or gaining muscle make sure you are in the right group to ensure maximum progress.
